The Nyika Highlands are split between Malawi and Zambia. The Malawian side hosts the larger portion of the Nyika National Park with many different routes and trails to follow. It extends across the great plateau with highland grass swaying in the breeze and rocky outcrops punctuating the awesome landscape.
Nyika National Park is huge, the oldest and largest in Malawi with an area of 3,200 square kilometres. The highlands are composed of a variety of sights and habitats including rolling grasslands, waterfalls, streams feeding into lakes, neolithic rock shelters and trout pools. During the wet season, the highlands are alive with over 200 hundred species of orchid in flower.
The range of landscapes within the park provide a diversity of wildlife that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Within Nyika you can experience the park whilst on foot, mountain bike or a traditional 4x4 experience. You can expect to see animals such as antelope within the montane vegetation, buffalo along the lower grounds, whilst elephants and lions have been recently spotted on the high plateau. The park also has one the highest densities of leopard in Central Africa. Birdwatchers are rewarded with over 400 recorded species including the red-winged francolin - which is endemic to Nyika.
